What it costs

Say you sell 50 copies of a $20 ebook a month, $1,000 in sales.

  • Gumroad: 10% plus $0.50 a sale comes to $125 a month.
  • DPD: the $10 plan, plus Stripe’s 2.9% + $0.30 on each sale ($44), comes to $54 a month.

The gap grows with every sale, because DPD’s price doesn’t change with your sales. It changes only with how many products and how much file space you have (see pricing).

At very low volume it goes the other way. Five sales of that $20 ebook cost $12.50 on Gumroad and $14.40 on DPD. The two meet at about 7 sales a month.

When Gumroad is the better choice

  • You’re just starting out and sell a few copies a month. With no monthly fee, you pay nothing until you make a sale.
  • You’d like someone else to deal with sales tax and VAT. As the merchant of record, Gumroad collects and files them for you.
  • You want shoppers to find you through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace (those sales carry a 30% fee).

When DPD is the better choice

  • You sell more than a handful of copies a month. Past the flat monthly price, every sale is yours, less your processor’s fee.
  • You want buyers to shop on your own website, and the money to go straight into your own PayPal or Stripe account.
  • You sell PDFs and want each copy stamped with the buyer’s name and email, so shared copies can be traced.
  • You put out new versions of your products. DPD can send updated files to everyone who bought the old one.

Questions

Does DPD take a cut of each sale?

No. You pay your monthly plan, and your payment processor charges its usual fee. DPD doesn’t charge anything per sale.

Is DPD cheaper than Gumroad?

Once you sell more than a few copies a month, yes. For a $20 product, DPD’s $10 plan plus Stripe’s fees costs less than Gumroad’s fee from about 7 sales a month.

Can I move my Gumroad products to DPD?

Yes. Upload your files to DPD, set your prices, and swap Gumroad’s buttons on your site for DPD’s. You can try it all free for 30 days before you switch.
